At a meeting held on 19th June 2008 at Coleshill Town Hall certain questions were raised regrading the accountability of local planning officers. A proposed sale of a car park to a property developer who specialises in supermarkets raised concerns amongst local business's and residents alike. The concern was so great MP Mike O'Brien called a meeting to "put info out into the community". The main question was revolved around the secret nature of meetings and discussions between the council and the developer. Even local councillors by their own admission had been kept in the dark. High valuations of the land had been put aside in favour of lower values to achive the sale according to unidentified sources stated Mike O'Brien. A contract was also being hurriedly prepared which would be pre planning permission being applied for by the developer. Are we expected to believe that planning permission would not be granted to the developer after a sale had been agreed whether people opposed it or not? If sold where would the money go - maybe on proposed new council office facilities. Will a supermarket on the fringe of Coleshills High Street benefit the existing traders and residents. No it will only benefit the council, the developer and whichever supermarket chain manages to grab the plot. What is the thinking behind the councils aims to destroy the heart of Coleshill. The only future it would appear that they can see is the possible retail park that would encompass the car park , the leisure centre, the fire station and the police station. At the end of the meeting a vote was taken to see whether the people of Coleshill wanted tthe council to sell off the public assets on their behalf. The vote was 182 against the council and 1 for the sale by the council with 7 abstentions. What will the representatives of the people of Coleshill do now. Over to you Council planners, we await your response with interest.
